SABIC® PA6: General-Purpose Polyamide 6 Resin
SABIC® PA6 is a high-performance polyamide 6 (PA6) resin, manufactured by SABIC. As a cornerstone of the engineering plastics family, this semi-crystalline thermoplastic is well-regarded for its exceptional balance of toughness, stiffness, and heat resistance. It is a versatile material designed for a broad range of demanding applications where resilience, durability, and excellent surface finish are essential.
SABIC® PA6 offers an outstanding combination of high impact strength, good rigidity, and superior abrasion resistance. Its lower melting point and good processability make it an attractive and often more cost-effective alternative for various applications. This versatility, coupled with its good chemical resistance, makes it a reliable material for components across multiple industries.
Key Features & Benefits
- High Toughness & Impact Resistance: Provides exceptional durability and resistance to breakage, even at low temperatures, making it ideal for parts subjected to sudden shocks or impacts.
- Good Mechanical Strength: Offers a strong balance of tensile strength and stiffness for robust, functional components.
- Excellent Wear & Abrasion Resistance: The low coefficient of friction and high wear resistance make it suitable for parts subjected to constant friction or movement.
- Good Chemical Resistance: Exhibits good resistance to oils, greases, fuels, and a variety of chemicals.
- Excellent Surface Aesthetics: The material molds to a smooth, glossy finish, which is beneficial for visible parts and consumer goods.
- Good Processability: Its melt characteristics allow for efficient molding and fast cycle times.
Typical Applications
Due to its robust performance profile, SABIC® PA6 is widely used in a variety of industrial, automotive, and consumer sectors:
- Automotive: Engine covers, air intake systems, fuel caps, and various connectors and clips.
- Industrial Components: Gears, bearings, cams, rollers, and wear pads where good toughness is required.
- Electrical & Electronics: Connectors, cable ties, switches, and electrical housings.
- Consumer Goods: Power tool housings, furniture fittings, and sporting goods.
Typical Properties (Representative Values)
The mechanical properties of Nylon 6 are significantly affected by moisture content. The values below are provided for both “dry-as-molded” and “conditioned” states (at equilibrium with 50% relative humidity) to reflect its typical performance.
Processing Guidelines (General Injection Molding)
- Drying: Crucial. Due to its hygroscopic nature, the resin must be dried before processing to a moisture content of less than 0.2%. Recommended conditions: 80°C for 4-6 hours in a dehumidifying dryer.
- Melt Temperature: 230 – 250 °C.
- Mold Temperature: 60 – 90 °C.
- Injection Speed: Use a fast injection speed to ensure good mold filling.
- Holding Pressure: Should be sufficient to prevent sink marks and ensure part density.
Packaging & Storage
SABIC® PA6 is typically supplied in moisture-proof 25 kg bags or bulk containers. For optimal product quality, store in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Keep packaging sealed until ready for use to prevent moisture absorption.
