SABIC® PA66: General-Purpose Polyamide 66 Resin
SABIC® PA66 is a high-performance polyamide 66 (PA66) resin, manufactured by SABIC. As a cornerstone of the engineering plastics family, this semi-crystalline thermoplastic is known for its exceptional balance of mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. It is a workhorse material designed for a broad range of demanding applications where strength, stiffness, and durability are paramount.
SABIC® PA66 offers an outstanding combination of high tensile strength, excellent rigidity, and superior abrasion resistance. Its high melting point and good heat deflection temperature make it a reliable choice for components operating in high-temperature environments. This versatility, coupled with its good chemical resistance, makes it a preferred material for replacing metal in various applications across multiple industries.
Key Features & Benefits
- High Mechanical Strength: Provides exceptional tensile strength and stiffness, allowing for the design of robust, load-bearing components.
- Excellent Wear & Abrasion Resistance: The low coefficient of friction and high wear resistance make it ideal for parts subjected to constant friction or movement.
- Good Heat Resistance: Maintains mechanical integrity at elevated temperatures, suitable for under-the-hood automotive parts and other high-temperature applications.
- High Chemical Resistance: Exhibits good resistance to oils, greases, fuels, and a variety of chemicals.
- Dimensional Stability: Provides reliable performance and maintains form under load.
- Electrical Insulation: Features good dielectric strength and electrical insulation properties.
Typical Applications
Due to its robust performance profile, SABIC® PA66 is widely used in a variety of industrial, automotive, and consumer sectors:
- Automotive: Engine covers, air intake manifolds, radiator end tanks, fan blades, and various connectors and clips.
- Industrial Components: Gears, bearings, cams, rollers, sprockets, and wear pads.
- Electrical & Electronics: Connectors, cable ties, switches, and electrical housings.
- Consumer Goods: Power tool housings, furniture fittings, and sporting goods.
Typical Properties (Representative Values)
The mechanical properties of Nylon 66 are significantly affected by moisture content. The values below are provided for both “dry-as-molded” and “conditioned” states (at equilibrium with 50% relative humidity) to reflect its typical performance.
Processing Guidelines (General Injection Molding)
- Drying: Crucial. Due to its hygroscopic nature, the resin must be dried before processing to a moisture content of less than 0.2%. Recommended conditions: 80°C for 4-6 hours in a dehumidifying dryer.
- Melt Temperature: 270 – 290 °C.
- Mold Temperature: 60 – 90 °C.
- Injection Speed: Use a fast injection speed to ensure good mold filling.
- Holding Pressure: Should be sufficient to prevent sink marks and ensure part density.
Packaging & Storage
SABIC® PA66 is typically supplied in moisture-proof 25 kg bags or bulk containers. For optimal product quality, store in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Keep packaging sealed until ready for use to prevent moisture absorption.
